Miami University’s program in Health Information Technology (HIT) is designed to prepare students for jobs that integrate healthcare and technology in the evolving U.S. healthcare system. What is Health Information Technology?

Health Information Technology lets health care providers manage patient care through secure use and sharing of health information. It promotes the use of electronic health records (EHRs) instead of paper medical records to maintain health information for patients and medical professionals.

Health Information Technology can substantially improve patient care and our nation’s health care system by providing complete and accurate information about a patient’s health. This will help doctors diagnose health problems sooner, reduce medical errors and provide safer care at lower costs.

What classes would I take?

Based on your background, you will complete foundational courses in technology and human health fundamentals. A core-curriculum for all students will include courses in database, project management, information security, healthcare systems and culture, and global issues in information technology. You will also complete the Global Miami Plan, including a capstone experience.

What could I do & where could I work as an HIT grad?

The health information technology field is relatively young and rapidly growing. HIT graduates may work in technical support, data analysis, reporting, database administration, user education, software development, testing and customization.
Health information professionals work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, physicians offices, nursing care facilities, outpatient care centers, home healthcare services, insurance companies, education environments, federal and state government agencies as well as software and hardware companies.

Will the field continue to grow?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of health information professionals is expected to increase by 20 percent, much faster than the average for all occupations, through 2018. With the increasing use of electronic health records, more professionals will be needed to complete the new responsibilities associated with electronic data management.

Is financial aid available?

Yes, grants, loans, work study opportunities and scholarships are available to students at Miami’s regional locations. In fact, there are some scholarships that have been set up specifically for students pursuing Information Technology degrees.
