Artist Series Adds Shows Featuring Douglas, Spalding
August 16, 2012
Miami University Regionals Artist Series adds Jerry Douglas on Sept. 15 and Esperanza Spalding on Oct. 7 to an already outstanding lineup of performances at the Hamilton and Middletown campuses at 7:30 pm.
Jerry Douglas is Ohio-born and began playing Dobro guitar at the age of eight. In 2011, Douglas received the Annual Americana Honors and Awards coveted Lifetime Achievement Award for Instrumentalist. Douglas is a featured member of Alison Krauss and Union Station. His new album Traveler features contributions by Eric Clapton, Paul Simon and Mumford and Sons.
Esperanza Spalding is a jazz bassist, vocalist and composer with uncanny instrumental chops, a multi-lingual voice that showcases a natural beauty that borders on the hypnotic. At the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies, Spalding performed at Oslo City Hall in honor of the 2009 Laureate President Barack Obama and again at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. She was personally selected by Obama, as per the tradition of one laureate-invited-artist to perform. In 2011, Spalding received one of the music industry’s most prestigious prizes, the Grammy for Best New Artist.
The performance by Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Band on Aug. 25 is sold out. Other performers scheduled for the 2012-2013 Artist Series at Miami Hamilton’s Parrish Auditorium include Riders in the Sky on Nov. 3, Carolina Chocolate Drops on Nov. 19, Rhonda Vincent on March 9 and Wilcox/Werner on April 13. Artist Series performances at Miami Middletown’s Dave Finkelman Auditorium include Hugh Laurie on August 25, Dailey and Vincent on Sept. 22, Arlo Guthrie on Oct. 20, Mary Black on Nov. 14, Ladysmith Black Mambazo on Feb. 13 and Chick Corea on April 21.
