Contact the ELL Specialist
English Language Learners
There are students attending Miami University Hamilton from over 35 different countries,
each with a different command of the English language. The Office of Learning Assistance
has a full-time ELL specialist on staff to provide support for these students.
The ELL specialist can help with culture, pronunciation, grammar, writing, etc.,
as well as first year advising.
The ELL Specialist conducts FREE workshops specifically designed for ELL students on campus.
Pronunciation, grammar, and American culture are examples of topics covered.

ENG 007 ELL
Fundamentals of Writing
(3 credit hours, credit/no credit)
This course is designed to teach non-native English speakers how to write effective essays. Instruction
includes a multiple-step approach to the essay writing process with emphasis on paragraph development,
sentence structure, and vocabulary enhancement. Assignments may include an introduction to research
writing as well as the following essay types: expressive, analytical, explanatory, and argument.
ENG 109
College Composition
(4 credit hours, graded)
This course for non-native speakers is an adaptation of English 111 plus ENG 104 and fulfills a Global Miami Plan requirement.
This graded course focuses on developing the rhetorical and analytical skills necessary to produce effective writing
at the college level including the principles of organization and style as well as strategies to sharpen critical thinking, reading, writing, revising and editing skills.
ENG 105 ELL
Writing Studio
(1 credit hour, graded)
Concurrent registration in ENG 112 required. Students work in small groups and individually learn ways to improve academic writing in English. Course includes mini-lessons on rhetoric, grammar, and sentence structure. Instructor guidance and peer revision help to clarify assignments and improve papers assigned in ENG 112.

EDT 002 ELL
College Reading
(3 credit hours, credit/no credit)
This course for non-native speakers is an adaptation of EDT 002. Instruction focuses on
learning and applying strategies in reading to improve language, vocabulary, and comprehension.
